CROSSWORD – WORD-MAPS

Alec has devised three word-maps which adapt the form of the cryptic crossword and apply it to the natural and man-made environment. The crossword schema follow: a metro line and its stations (Birmingham Snowhill– Wolverhampton St George’s); three English rivers (Tyne, Tees and Wear) and their tributaries; and a field guide to native birds of the British Isles. These word-maps are archaeological excavations of historical and linguistic topographies.

The clues have been realised as posters along the metro (commissioned by the public), cove cards displayed in metro carriages (commissioned by nexus), and as nest boxes (commissioned by YSP).

‘All crosswords are filled with ordinary words. great clues render the words memorable and the clues unforgettable’ – Sandy Balfour
